Philadelphia - Drexel field hockey trailed 1-0 in the second half before converting two consecutive penalty corners to overtake Virginia Commonwealth, 2-1, in a Colonial Athletic Association game played at Buckley Field. The win evened Drexel's overall record to 6-6 and improved its conference record to 2-1. The Dragons have now won four of their last five conference games dating back to last season. VCU dipped to 4-6 (1-2 CAA) on the season.
The teams were unable to score in the first half despite Drexel generating six penalty corners and 11 shots. Despite the action generated by the Dragons' offense it was the Rams who struck first. VCU's Jenna Harris deflected a pass toward the cage at point-blank range by was denied by goalie Colleen McAndrew. Harris gathered the rebound and scored to put the Rams on top. Drexel looked to respond and finally answered on the Dragons' eighth penalty corner of the game. Sarah Gostomski fired a shot toward the cage where Amanda Kicera was able to get her stick on the ball and send it past VCU goalie Laura Baker. Less than three minutes later, Gostomski fired another shot off of a broken penalty corner that caromed off of the stick of Jordan Freese. Kim Tunell then deflected the ball into the cage to give the Dragons a lead they would not relinquish.
For the game the Dragons outshot the Rams, 19-9, and held a 12-3 edge in penalty corners. McAndrew made four saves as she lowered her conference goals against average to 0.67 in three games this season. Baker made six saves for VCU.
On Oct. 5, Drexel will begin its third three-game road trip of the season with a CAA game against William & Mary. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
